King Philip II of Spain (1527 - 1598)

Born in Valladolid (Spain) on May 21, 1527 and died in San Lorenzo de El Escorial on September 13, 1598 and was the eighteenth King of Portugal.
Son of Emperor Carlos V of Spain and Isabel of Portugal, he was the grandson of King Manuel I of Portugal and thus a natural candidate to succeed the Portuguese throne, which he came to inherit following the Alcazarquivir battle disaster that killed King Sebastian.

Philip II was proclaimed King of Portugal at the assembly courts of Tomar with the commitment to respect Portuguese forum charters and exemptions and to appoint to his new kingdom Portuguese governors or members of the royal family only.
An intelligent, cultured and educated man, an art lover as well as of art collecting and, in particular, architecture, he elects religion as a pillar of governance, even intending to take control of the Church functioning in her territories, something that raised animosity from Popes Pius V and Paul IV.
In the Convent of Christ, he is responsible for the beginning of the Convent´s Aqueduct as a great and magnificent work of hydraulic engineering. This equipment allowed monastic life to become autonomous in terms of drinking water supply.
