The Order of Christ sustained its religious home, not only thanks to royal donations, but also through rents and privileges stemming from rural and urban properties owned all over the world.
Regarding the Tomar region, the Master Table of the Order of Christ owned a number of buildings in the village such as wine and oil presses, warehouses and mills, for activities around purchasing, selling and leasing of agricultural and industrial resources. So, not only it held property where it directly and indirectly exploited the soil, but also held the logistical and technical resources for the processing, storage and sale of agricultural goods.
The Casa dos Cubos / House of Cubes, an early 14th century building located near the Nabão River was a warehouse of agricultural foodstuffs in bulk. It is assumed that there existed a small pier that allowed sending out agricultural products by river ways.
By the nature of the place´s foundation, the Convent, as the religious house of the Order of Christ, has become always associated with the town of Tomar from an urban point of view. From a rural viewpoint, the Convent became associated with the entire region through the Commendations lordship organisation, some of which were contemporary of the Order of the Temple.
